About Clean Label

Clean Label is a sustainable, plastic-free, and organic food and groceries e-commerce store based in India. The company focuses on following eco-friendly business practices, and using reusable containers are a major part of the business. These grocery storage containers are returned to the company by the customers after use.

The challenge

As part of their eco-friendly business practice, Clean Label was keen on recycling the storage containers used for packaging their groceries, however the process involved was tedious, there was no way to keep track of the containers, and they needed a solution to make the entire process cost-efficient.

Clean Label had a few important questions while looking for a solution partner:

  • How do our customers keep track of the containers they have?
  • How do we optimize the container collection process?

    Clean Label was able to resolve the challenges by building a robust container return system using Catalyst.Catalyst is a simplified and integrated serverless computing platform that combines multiple features of serverless computing on a single stack. With Catalyst, you can avoid the hassle of integrating several serverless components in a large and complex ecosystem, and instead focus on building applications with minimal effort and time. The platform is less complex than most serverless software providers and has a unified full-stack architecture which helped Clean Label to develop and go to market in a concise time.


    The solution story

    When a customer purchases an item, they’re charged a small amount as a deposit for each grocery container. The amount for each container is then balanced during the next purchase. Once the customer places an order, Clean Label checks for the details of any containers they previously took out and arranges for delivery of the next set of groceries, as well as picking up any empty containers from the customer’s location. This involves a great amount of information, as well as a systematic approach to ensure smooth delivery and pickup.

    Using Catalyst, Clean Label was able to arrive at a solution that involved tracking the containers by company and customer, with the condition of the container being verified by delivery staff as well as an optimized delivery and return system. A web portal was created for staff and customers to track the containers and all the money involved in the process. The solution was linked to Zoho Inventory to integrate the purchase information with the container return information automatically.


    For the delivery staff

    Catalyst helps delivery staff verify the condition of containers using the image moderation feature in the framework. This ensured the return of only the containers that are in good condition. The next version of the mobile-based delivery app for delivery staff is under development now.

    This solution greatly helped Clean Label minimize the errors incurred due to manual tracking, created more transparency for management and customers, and helped optimize costs through an organized return process.

These functions are used to fetch data from Zoho Inventory and integrate them with the container return solution.


Cron functions

Cron functions are run to check for timely updates of container return status. Mail alerts to customers are triggered if the containers are not returned within a stipulated time.


Image moderation

Catalyst's image moderation component is used to check for damaged containers and labels. This way Clean Label avoids collecting containers that are no longer usable and can deduct deposit money accordingly.


Email service

Mailing services and email templates on the Catalyst platform are used to trigger emails to customers after purchases and reminders for returns.

The benefits and ROI

Using Catalyst, Clean Label is able to keep track of all the containers that are purchased, in an effortless way. Previously, the whole process was manual and tedious, along with having no insight into damaged containers and inefficient return practices. Catalyst was able to optimize the whole process by collating the data in one place, giving the shop admin a vivid picture of all the containers and their whereabouts.

The seamless integration with Zoho inventory, and the container tracking system on Catalyst ensured that no container is missed during returns and future purchases. The solution was able to improve the return process and also cut down OpEx by 30%.
